Endoscopy including at exercise
Endoscopy including at exercise
Most frequently used to examine the respiratory system, but we can also 'scope the sinuses, bladder and uterus. We also have access to the latest technology allowing us to position the fibre optic tube (endoscope) in your horse’s throat and then watch the larynx & surrounding structures ‘live’ as your horse breathes. This is at any speed from walk to gallop and all watched live on a laptop screen, with a video record to review later. It is non-invasive with the tube coming out of the horses nostril and attached to a bridle. The horse can be ridden, lunged or driven with the rest of the equipment attached to the harness, a surcingle or backpack for the rider. Endoscopy also allows us to take tissue samples as we look or collect fluid and cells from the airway for a more accurate diagnosis of breathing problems. For more information on management of the coughing horse or gastric ulcers, please see the relevant information sheet…

Gastroscopy clinics
Gastroscopy clinics
The only way to diagnose gastric ulcers is to look inside your horse’s stomach. We have access to a 3 metre scope so we can do this and provide the facilities to starve prior to examining for gastric and duodenal ulcers. Horses can present with a variety of signs, from colic to being cold-backed, but in many cases these signs may be subtle or non-specific. Many horses show undesirable behavioural changes and are significantly less grumpy once treated. See our information sheet on gastric ulcers for more details….
Holistic caring approach
Holistic caring approach
We are very proud of our holistic approach to the care of your horse, we treat the ‘WHOLE’ horse. This means that we do not just treat one condition in isolation, but consider the effects that one problem can have on other parts of the body e.g. a colicy horse may also have a liver problem; a post-op case may need physiotherapy to help abdominal muscle strength and limb mobility; a horse on box rest may require drugs to prevent a flare up of painful leg arthritis or a dust allergy cough; a horse with a painful neck will need food & water raised off the floor, whilst pulling hay out of a haynet may be difficult; a horse with sacroiliac disease may also have painful front feet or gastric ulcers and so it goes on…. We don’t just rely on drugs for treatment, we also consider if a horse requires corrective farriery, a change in diet, physiotherapy, saddle fit checked, acupuncture etc, etc……

Lameness Investigations
Full work-ups performed at the clinic to pinpoint the problem and provide targeted treatment. Subtle lameness is a speciality. Realistic rehabilitation programs and a sensible guide to the likelihood of return to full work. Practical advice and logical answers also provided for those not wanting a full investigation. First we locate the source of pain by nerve blocking if not obvious on physical examination. Then we image the area of pain with X-rays and ultrasound. Sometimes we identify the problem more specifically by placing local anaesthetic into joint spaces or bursa or tendon sheaths. See our info sheet on lameness…

Laminitis risk assessment
Laminitis risk assessment
Newly developed blood-test based assessment to quantify how likely your pony is to develop laminitis. Over the last 3 years it has become very obvious that the majority of laminitis cases are related to insulin resistance or cushings disease with grass, lack of adequate exercise and obesity still contributing to the problem. One of our practice aims is to prevent disease, we are passionate about it and this blood test combined with our advice can genuinely help to prevent laminitis. See laminitis info. Sheet…
